Affiliated Centers & Initiatives

We amplify cross-learning and impact to promote human development across the life course by incubating and hosting centers, research labs, scholars, and external partners under our inclusive IHD umbrella. We especially focus on two key developmental windows that shape the life course: Early Childhood and Adolescence.

Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP)

IHD’s shared history with the Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP) dates back almost 100 years. The Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP) at the University of California, Berkeley is a lab school providing care and education to children ages 3 months to 5 years. The Harold E. Jones Child Study Center (CSC), ECEP’s first lab school, was founded in 1927 by a Rockefeller Foundation grant, through IHD. The center was created as a living laboratory for university researchers to conduct ground-breaking developmental science research. Currently, eight developmental labs at UC Berkeley conduct studies at the six ECEP sites. The program serves over 260 diverse families and children.

Innovations for Youth (i4Y)

Innovations for Youth (i4Y) is an interdisciplinary research hub addressing issues of youth inequity through collaborative research, training, and community engagement. i4Y is an affiliated center working in partnership with IHD to advance community-engaged research with youth to support adolescence and the transition to adulthood. i4Y brings long-term multi-disciplinary community partnerships and national networks with K-12 school districts and non-profits focused on strengthening youth voice and engagement while addressing issues such as youth homelessness, chronic absenteeism, mental health and wellbeing, and student equity.

The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC)

The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) sponsors groundbreaking scientific research on social and emotional well-being and helps people apply this research to their personal and professional lives. GGSC was founded — and continues — as part of the broader IHD portfolio of centers, aligned with IHD’s mission to advance thriving across the life course.

Equity and Excellence in Early Childhood (E3C)

E3C is a new public impact alliance uniting researchers, educators, and public-sector changemakers to understand what’s working, reimagine what’s possible, and co-create solutions that deliver lasting impact for children, families, and communities.
