~An opportunity to synthesize thinking about young
children and reaffirm our vision for children, for Early Childhood
Education professionals and CSC families and alumni~
Friday, May 2, 7-9p.m.: Evening Keynote Address
and Social
We welcome back CSC teacher emeritus Thelma Harms,
Director of Curriculum Development, Frank Porter Graham Child Development
Center, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill who will recall
her time at the CSC, speak to the importance of Laboratory Schools,
and offer a focus toward the future.

Presentations and Discussions
The morning researcher panel, “Researchers
from the Outside Looking In,” will focus on how children think
and respond to challenge and include Abbey Alkon, Alice Klein &
Prentice Starkey, Alison Gopnik, and Jonas Langer.
The afternoon teacher researcher panel, “Researchers
from the Inside Reflecting Out,” will address the CSC classroom
ecology and its impact on peer culture and imagination. It will
include Rebecca Tracy, Barbara Scales, and Jane Perry.
The conference will conclude with a presentation
by Marcy Whitebook on “Next Steps in Advocacy for Young Children.”
Exhibition “Making Spaces for Small
and Young Children to Play,” Susan Soloman, Curator,
will be on display at the CSC during the conference.
The San Francisco Bay Area has a distinguished history
of supporting innovative sites where children can play. This exhibition
will highlight examples built after World War II, including one
of the last Adventure Playgrounds to survive in the United States,
and newer settings, influenced by contemporary developments in playground
design. The exhibit will examine the role of the purpose-built playground
in an era of commodification, heightened concerns about safety,
and federal laws regarding social inclusion.
