Community Involvement

Getting the Word Out

The Getting the Word Out Committee at the Institute of Human Development works on bringing findings from recent developmental research to the attention of colleagues in other fields, professionals whose work is based on developmental principles, and community members who might find the information useful in their daily lives.

Previous Workshops:
In each of the past four years, the Committee has offered a day-long Workshop for teachers, administrators, and child care staff who work with children and their families in the larger Bay Area. In three very successful Workshops, attendees heard from researchers and practitioners who focus on Easing Young Children's Transition to Elementary School (November 1999), Fostering Optimal Social and Emotional Development of Young Children (December 2000) and Understanding Challenges and Promoting Strengths in Adolescents (December 2001). These events were very well attended and participants were enthusiastic about the opportunity to meet with presenters in smaller groups after hearing the highlights of each one's work.  For 2002, we offered a workshop for educators titled Diversities in the Classroom:  New Findings to Foster Children's Development.  The workshop was held at the UCB Clark Kerr Conference Center on Saturday, November 2, 2002.

The November 2002 Workshop Summary is now available in PDF format, and can be viewed using Adobe® Acrobat® Reader®. You can also view the summary for the December 2001 Workshop.

Participate

During the course of the academic year there are many opportunities to be involved in the activities of the Institute. Take a look at our News and Events page for news of seminars, colloquia, and other events. There are also many opportunities to participate in research as a subject in one of the studies or as a volunteer.

Volunteer to Help

Many of the projects take advantage of volunteer help from students and others. Although we do not have any specific requests at present, those interested in volunteering should contact any research project with which they would like to be involved. Current research projects can be found in the Research section of our site.
